On the night of April 14, VNPT and other enterprises are implementing change in landline area code for provinces in Phase 2 (in line with the telecommunication repository plan in Circular 22 issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications - MIC). More thorough preparation has been carried out since the number of provinces in this phase is two times more than the previous one.

VNPT, the group accounting for nearly 90% of the total landline subscribers, says all preparation has been completed. Although this time, the change in area code is applied for only about 1 million subscribers, the number of provinces is twofold; thus, VNPT has conducted early and careful preparation in this phase. VNPT has developed technical plans for call centers and for all  in-service subscribing types. The group has provided training in technical plans for VNPT units in provincial and city levels as well as formulated detailed scenarios of trial service for all subscribing types in provinces and cities affected in this phase. In addition, the group has also conducted trial-run in changing area code for call centers and all landline subscribing types besides cooperated with other enterprises to pilot and test connectivity, charge information, etc.

To take initiative in solving unexpected scenarios and to ensure successful change in area codes, VNPT implemented area code change for Bac Kan on April 11, 2017. All scenarios have been tested and proven positive results. The area code in Bac Kan has been changed from 0281 to 0209, and intra-provincial, inter-provincial, inter-network calls have been successfully connected.

At 9 p.m on April 11, 2017, all system database and contact points of internal, external units of VNPT have been fully ready for area code change in Bac Kan. As of 1 a.m on April 12, all provinces and cities have been able to perform seamless calls to the former and new area code of Bac Kan via simultaneous calls.

To assure convenience for customers, besides implementing area code change in nighttime, VNPT provides customers the app VNPT Update Contacts, allowing automatic updates of new area codes in phone contact lists. The app is developed by VNPT Media Corporation and available on both Android and iOS.

After downloading and setting up, customers open the app, select "Phase 2" (on Android phones) or "Select all" (on iOS phones) to automatically run the updates of provinces undergone area code change in this phase (updates of contact lists begin on April 15).
